) (comic backstory used for headcanon until confirmed or denied by movie canon)Personality:
Hawkeye is a loyal, trusted, and seasoned member of the S.H.I.E.L.D. team. However, he doesn't just blindly follow orders. Natasha Romanov mentions that he “made a different call” and didn't assassinate her, demonstrating that he is given enough room by his superiors to make his own decisions when needed. Clint's no dummy either. In the beginning of Avengers
he is the only one to remind Fury that the Tesseract works both ways as a portal, and to suggest that S.H.I.E.L.D.'s trouble with it might be due to activity on the other side of that portal. When Loki brainwashes him we see he's also an expert tactician, quickly gathering an army of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s enemies, hatching the plan to retrieve an artifact from the German museum using a curator's eyeball, and leading the attack on the helicarrier which very nearly brings it down and results in Coulson's death, Loki's freedom, and the temporary dissolution of the Avengers team.
Brainwashed Hawkeye is strictly business, while Dr. Solvieg is nearly giddy with the excitement of working with the Tesseract. I believe that the Tesseract suppresses everything but what it needs to get the job done; while Solvieg requires his enthusiasm to function, Hawkeye merely needs a goal to achieve and a target. It may in fact be the only way to rid him of his strong conscience and sense of duty to S.H.I.E.L.D., allowing him to attack even Natasha without hesitation. Once he's clear of the brainwashing, he's full of remorse and comments to Natasha that he was “unmade”. Rather than wallow in it, though, he's ready for action as soon as needed, offering to fly the plane to New York with Captain America and Romanov, and participating in the battle with the Chitauri. Much of this is likely a redirecting of his guilt into revenge on Loki and an attempt to clean up the mess he's helped create. We can see during the battle that when Clint is in his right mind, he retains the tactical skills and archery prowess but also more of a civic-minded attitude: he helps children out of buses and gets civilians to safety. He also merges himself into the team, coordinating his actions with the rest of the Avengers, just as smoothly as he previously led S.H.I.E.L.D.'s enemies. It's clear that Clint can adapt to the situation at hand with ease.
That being said, he does admit in an extended scene in Avengers
that he is not as good with a gun; additionally, Natasha is able to defeat him quite easily in hand-to-hand combat. Hawkeye shines best when he's got a bow and arrow in hand, and is quite the archery nerd to boot. In the comics, he actually utters the words: “Gosh, I love arrows”, and in both comics and movie he has a custom bow, quiver, and trick arrow set designed for himself.
Being an archer possessed with such good eyesight, it makes sense that Clint fights from a distance. However, it may go beyond that to an emotional distancing from others. In the beginning of Avengers
, he is chastised by Fury for being “in his nest” rather than on the floor of the headquarters keeping an eye on the scientists. However, he quickly points out that he was in fact keeping an eye on everything: “I see better from a distance.” Distancing himself from others and the situation gives him a unique perspective and allows him to make better judgment calls than if he were close up in the thick of things. It's also likely he uses humor to distance himself and defuse situations. Despite his humorless demeanor during the majority of his screentime in the Avengers
movie, Hawkeye in the comics tends to be good-natured and wisecracking. We see a little of this in Thor
when he jokingly tells Coulson to hurry up and give the order to shoot because he's starting to root for the title character currently in his crosshairs.
Clint is relatively stable and self-assured, though the comics hint he hasn't always been: As a child, he was raised by multiple abusive father figures, orphaned, and trained by circus criminals. This would imply he hasn't really had a stable family until joining S.H.I.E.L.D. Although the Marvel movies have not brought up his past yet, these events might explain a little of why he sees so much potential in Natasha Romanov and chooses to reach out to her rather than put her down as ordered. He can see that she, too, has been manipulated since childhood. Since S.H.I.E.L.D. has done so much for him, he figures it can help Romanov in the same way. It's no surprise that out of anyone in S.H.I.E.L.D. he's formed the most comfortable and close partnership with her.
As an Avenger, it's likely Hawkeye frequently deals with inadequacy issues. He mentions to Spiderman in the comics that if he ever misses with an arrow, he won't be anybody but a “guy with a bow” since he has no superhuman abilities. All he has is his archery skill to keep him toe-to-toe with his colleagues and friends. That's a lot of pressure. Since Loki targeted him for brainwashing it makes sense that he might feel some shame alongside the guilt; not only did he turn on his S.H.I.E.L.D. family but he was turned so easily, something no other Avenger fell victim to.Powers/Abilities:
No superhuman traits, just really good at archery as he's been trained in it since childhood. He also possesses an intuitive feel for the bow (at one point he shoots down a Chitauri ship without even looking) and keen eyesight.
Being a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, he's also trained in hand-to-hand and knife combat, espionage, tactics, and light arms (revolver). But as previously mentioned, his gun and hand-to-hand skills aren't anywhere near as good as his archery.
Other than that he's an ordinary human, susceptible to brainwashing and getting his ass kicked like everyone else.Possessions:
-mechanized quiver of “trick arrows” (explosive, grapple, etc.)
-folding double recurve bow
-pack with light provisionsArrival:
Alien ship. I'm going to assume he was in the middle of a mission when all this went down and that he doesn't remember what happened between then and now.
